The history of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle began in Milwaukee in 1903.  The Harley Davidson logo is certainly one of the most famous logos in the world and the fans of Harley take pride in the bikes. The logo is popularly referred to as the "Bar and Shield" logo.  I have been unable to find much information on the origins of the design of this logo.  Once I do find some information, I will update this page.  
 
Harley-Davidson  also licenses its logo, which is a profitable side business ($41 million of revenue in 2004, or almost 5% of net income.  So the next time you purchase a Harley Davidson belt buckle, pen or sticker, part of that would go to the Harley Davidson company. Also, every Harley-Davidson dealership has a shop logo, a design that says something about the dealership and which sets it apart from every other dealership in the world. The next time you drive past a Harley store, look for its store logo too.

The Bar and shield logo was first used by Harley-Davidson in 1910according to
American thunder on Speed cahnnel.

from what I have read about the logo it was drawn by an empoyee of HD back in
the early days of the company and left on the desk of one of the founders and
never sighned. no one ever found the artists identity

if you are selling products with the HD logo on it without getting permission,
Harley can take all of your products and potentially sue you. you need to be
licensed if you dont want to get in trouble

I have seen the "Bar & Shield" used in various other would be
infringements. Honda-Davidsons, Yamma-Harleys, etc. I wish to do some
dimensional augmentation in my applications, is that a violation of the same?

I have just bought a Harley Davidson emblem.
This
is a brass eagle mounted on the enamel badge and a brass base under this.
It is
very attractive and looks to be quite old.It is 6 inches tall by 4
inches
wide.
If anyone has any idea of date I would be interested.

from what I understand the "bar and sheild" logo was drawn by one of
HD's employees and left on a desk unsighned and to this day is one of the top
three most recognized logos in the world.
